If going through a place where foreign travellers get targeted (like an airport) keeping the colour of your passport private could be a good idea. Some passport wallets block RFID readers. 2. a VPN- using WiFi hotspots in transit hubs is fine, as long as you don’t mind the security risks. Security-wise, this is the equivalent of leaving your cash-filled wallet… 3. excessive toiletries- trust me, they have toothpaste where you’re going. And the flavours are half the fun! Just make sure you check the lingo, or you may end up brushing your teeth with diaper cream, which is horrible 4. essential toiletries: ladies, bring sanitary essentials, if you’re particular. Everyone: carry important prescriptions, including medical info. This includes contact lenses. 5. basic language skills- essential. It’s nice to be nice. 6. a scarf/wrap: can hide stains, act as a sunblock, picnic blanket, wipe up tears, wrap for covering up in places that require elbow-to-knee coverage and more. 7. more than one mask- nothing worse than trying to buy one, but they won’t let you into the store without one. The cotton jobbies are cheap and easy to wash in the sink. Check for requirements before you travel, for both airline standards and your destination. 8. hand sanitiser/wipes- depends on where you’re going, and regular access to clean water for hand-washing. That little bottle you’re allowed to carry on the plane isn’t going to cut it for a longer trip. Most conservative Muslim countries now allow people to use alcohol-based hand sanitiser. Do the research 9. small gifts for people you meet. ok, not essential, but I’ve never met anyone who wasn’t tickled by a tiny gift: Mardi Gras beads, a mini bottle of Tabasco, etc. 10. insurance that covers what you need. 11. research on the local gov’t contact-tracing app/why you should/shouldn’t opt in" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> passport identifies where you come from. If going through a place where foreign travellers get targeted (like an airport) keeping the colour of your passport private could be a good idea. A VPN masks your identity. Sure, this might slightly slow down already-pokey free WiFi speeds, but the protection is worth it.

Excessive toiletries

Trust me, they have toothpaste where you’re going. Not just a fashionable sartorial statement, this scrap of cloth is a multi-use tool. It can hide stains, block the sun, double as a picnic blanket and then a pillow for a post-prandial nap, wipe up tears, act as a shawl, head covering or sari in places that require modest dress, and more.
