Found in the state\u2019s Lower Peninsula, near Empire, the park boasts a 35-mile stretch of sparkling Lake Michigan coastline. This postcard-perfect spot is a hit for outdoor enthusiasts looking for a place to camp, as it has an abundance of wooded campsites. Between sleeps, be sure to hike through the hardwoods, up to the bluffs, play in the water, or simply stroll the beach. In total, about 1,500 of those 4,800 miles\u2014the most of any state\u2014are found in Michigan. The trail touches just about every quadrant of the state, including both the Lower and Upper Peninsulas, offering trail-goers prime views of scenic lakes, forests, rugged hills, waterfalls, and the Lake Superior shoreline. The North Country Trail Association has <a href=\"https:\/\/northcountrytrail.org\/the-trail\/michigan\/\">maps that detail the different routes by region<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"North Country Dreamland\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/65504232?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"who-turned-out-the-lights\">Who turned out the lights?<\/h4>\n<p>Ever see a sign that says \u201cNO WHITE LIGHT PERMITTED\u201d\u2026? Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.midarkskypark.org\/\">Headlands International Dark Sky Park<\/a> in Emmet County, and you will. That\u2019s because this 550-acre county park on undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline is a protected dark sky area. Here, families can gaze at the starry skies without any light pollution. Of note, the stars you see will vary based on when you\u2019re visiting. For instance, Orion is visible in the spring but disappears in the summer months. This resort area boasts an array of historical landmarks and fun family-friendly attractions. There\u2019s Fort Mackinac\u2014which served as a military outpost and is the oldest building in Michigan\u2014Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park, Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse, Biddle House (featuring the Mackinac Island Native American Museum), Mackinac Island State Park, and so much more. In 2022, Mackinac Island was named the best island in the Continental U.S. by <em>Travel &amp; Leisure Magazine<\/em>. Found in the Upper Peninsula, this managed wetland is an excellent spot for birding, as more than 200 different species have been logged.
