TWO-FIFTHS OF BRITS HAVE NOT SEEN FAMILY IN OVER 19 MONTHS DUE TO INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS

Brits now prepared to pay three times more for testing for international travel than they were three months ago

  • Almost a quarter of Brits (24%) are planning to travel for family reasons in 2021/2022
  • Brits now prepared to pay £61 per person for all necessary COVID-19 testing – up from £22 per person in March 2021
  • 28% of Brits planning to travel internationally for a holiday in 2021/2022

New data* by travel insurance provider battleface reveals the extent to which families have been kept apart due to international travel restrictions since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Almost a  quarter (24%) of those surveyed this week said that they are planning to travel abroad in 2021 or 2022 for family reasons, while a similar number (28%) would like to travel abroad for a holiday.

Of those that plan to travel overseas for family reasons, on average they have not seen those family members in 15 months. However, two-fifths (40%) have not seen those family members for over 19 months, rising to 54% among the 55+ age group.

With this in mind, people are prepared to pay three times more for testing now than they were three months ago. In March 2021, a survey conducted by battleface showed that Brits would pay on average £22 per person for PCR tests in order to travel abroad. Since then, further clarification on the UK government’s traffic light system has been announced along with the necessary requirements for those returning to the UK from international destinations. When the same question was asked in June**, the data shows that they are now prepared to pay £61 per person on average for all required tests to travel internationally. Private tests can cost £120 on the high street or over £200 at some clinics.

As speculation mounts as to whether double vaccinated Brits will be exempt from quarantine on return from amber destinations, further research shows that almost three quarters (74%) are prepared to complete a full vaccination programme in order to travel internationally this summer. Almost half (48%) of those planning a summer holiday this year are considering Spain, while similar numbers are looking at other amber list destinations, including Italy and Portugal both at 46%; Greece at 45% and 42% are thinking about a holiday in France.

Katie Crowe, Director of Communications for battleface, said: “It is clear from our latest data that there is a huge appetite for the return of international travel. While there are many Brits looking forward to an overseas holiday, there are even greater numbers who want to reconnect with family members who they haven’t seen in over a year. We hope very much that families who have been kept apart due to ongoing travel restrictions will be reunited as soon as possible.  battleface continues to offer travel insurance for all destinations including countries under FCDO and government essential and non-essential travel advisories.”
